The same way most animals do their selections and choose by measuring, so do humans. Of course, not exactly like them, though somehow it could be easily compared. Sexual Selection theory tells us that there is constant competition between same sex individuals and that is one of the most important steps for evolution. According to Charles Darwin's words: "Sexual selection depends on the success of certain individuals over others of the same sex, in relation to the propagation of the species; while natural selection depends on the success of both sexes, at all ages, in relation to the general conditions of life".
For most animals is by the sexual selection that female find a partner to get pregnant and raise a family. Male must be brave, find a good source of food and be capable of keep female in security. Sometimes to have an advantaged specific characteristic can also be a complement - like some bird species. However, there are two different kinds of sexual selection: the intrasexual and the intersexual. The intrasexual occurs between males (tipically) to compete and to conquer a female. The Intrasexual a. k. a. the "female choice" - males struggle for her acceptance and approval.
Humans have different aspects to be taken into account, to choose a relatively good partner, and that is valuable for both men and women. Features like status, beauty, sympathy and the power of purchase will always take part of our sexual selection. The selection ritual can take place at clubs, parties, work and academic environment. In spite of some natural and common ideas, selection remains the same to all humans, when referring to sexual selection; they can differ a lot from one another. |
